Paranormal investigations often tread the fine line between the unknown and the unexplained. As investigations become more and more common in the everyday world and not just on TV, more and more evidence is being presented of the afterlife. Which is great! Isn’t that what we are looking for? Unfortunately, some pieces of evidence can be misleading or flat out false. Debunking false evidence during and after paranormal investigations is crucial to shedding light on true evidence of the afterlife. Paranormal investigators face the daunting challenge of sifting through seas of potential evidence, including photos, audio recordings, videos, and eyewitness testimonies. However, not all evidence is created equal, and distinguishing between genuine paranormal from natural or man-made phenomena is essential. Two staples of paranormal investigations are the evidence collected on audio or video recordings. Both of these have the potential to produce unbelievable evidence of the paranormal. However, these two pieces of equipment are prone to noise and light contamination from external sources such as pareidolia, pets, human movement, and environmental sounds. Pay attention to shadows being cast by objects, people and pets moving around (even when they can’t be seen on camera), and take note of when your brain is trying to make a face out of odd shapes in the room. Environmental conditions pay a significant role in shaping perceptions during paranormal investigations. Factors such as lighting conditions, temperature fluctuations, and electromagnetic fields can create false impressions of paranormal activity. By meticulously documenting environmental variables, investigators can better contextualize their findings and separate genuine anomalies from environmental clutter. Eyewitness testimonies are invaluable sources of information in paranormal investigations, but they are also subject to interpretation and bias. Investigators must approach witness accounts with a critical eye yet be respectful of each person’s perspective. I was once on a "ghost hunt" in Savannah, Georgia. The tour was put together as a promotional piece for a famous paranormal investigation show of which my sons and I were fans. To make a very long story short, half of the patrons, including my sons and myself, were escorted, along with the host, to the basement of this home by a tour guide. The tour guide was a ball of energy and very excited to lean into and announce every bump, bang, and shuffle as being one of their resident spirits. At one point, she excused herself to sit in the security room to monitor the cameras while our host entertained us with lore and legends.
My ADD brain became bored quickly because I came here to investigate. I already knew the stories. I wanted action! I quietly made my way into the next room with my backpack full of equipment and sat down on the Victorian couch. I placed a EMF detector on the table in front of me and began a conversation in a whisper to whomever was in the room with me. A few minutes passed, and the host began to move our group to the next location. I quietly gathered my things and rejoined the group. No one every knew I was gone! Until... Our sweet little tour guide bursts out from the security room. She uses her outside voice to ask the group, "Where is the lady with the backpack?" Crap. I'm the lady with the backpack. I raise my hand in the same way you would when you're in trouble at school but don't want to bring attention to yourself. I have been busted sneaking into places I shouldn't be. The heads of 30 people turn to look at me. I see through my peripheral vision that my sons want to crawl into a hole and die of embarrassment. Same, Boys. Same. With the enthusiasm of someone who has just seen Bigfoot walk through her living room, our guide exclaims, "As soon as you sat on that couch in the other room, orbs surrounded you!" Is that what this is about? *Sigh* Do I tell a room full of people that are here with the hopes of catching a ghost on film that it was just dust that came off of the couch when I sat down? I chose to smile and not say anything. The use of orbs as paranormal evidence has long been a debate in the paranormal research world. These mysterious spherical anomalies are often captured in photographs or observed with the naked eye. As a paranormal investigator, I see orbs hundreds, if not thousands, of times during an evidence review. 99.5% of the time there is a natural explanation. However, that 0.5% still intrigues me. Orbs have been associated with supernatural phenomena for centuries. In folklore and spiritual beliefs, orbs are believed to be the manifestation of spirits or energy entities. However, from a scientific standpoint, orbs often have more mundane origins. Dust particles, pollen, moisture droplets, or even insects close to the camera lens can all create the illusion of orbs in photographs. These natural particles can reflect or refract light, resulting in the appearance of glowing spheres. An easy way to debunk an orb that has been captured on video is to watch its movement. Insects typically bright and move quickly in a straight line. They may turn and move in the other direction mid flight, as well. (Pay careful attention to the fact that I used the word "typically". Just as I used to tell my science students, in science only a few things fall under the "always" and "never" umbrella. There are a lot of exceptions to theories.) Even the cleanest of locations house dust particles-especially on pieces of fabric furniture. There are tiny particles in the air at all times, even if we can't see them with our naked eye. When one of those particles reflect light, it shows up as what we are calling orbs. Dust typically moves slowly and can be seen in an array of colors. Did someone in the video or photo just sit down on a piece of furniture and now they are surrounded by "orbs"? It's probably dust. Does that mean that all orbs are dust and bugs? Eh. Probably not? I have seen one or two orbs that made me stop and really ponder whether or not it was something I didn't understand. I'm not totally closed minded to the concept. To bridge the gap between the paranormal and the scientific, researchers continue to explore orbs through controlled experiments and technological advancements. Advanced imaging techniques, such as high-speed cameras and thermal imaging, offer new opportunities for studying these phenomena. Paranormal orbs remain an enigma, captivating the imaginations of believers while arousing skepticism among others. While natural explanations like dust, lens artifacts, and reflections can account for many observed orbs, the possibility of genuine supernatural phenomena cannot be entirely dismissed.
